Planning Plastering Training for Your Team: The Employer’s Brief

The best starting point for a team booking is a short description of the work staff need to do. “Learn plastering” is too broad to define the right practical course. A clear brief helps the school recommend a relevant programme and identify anything outside its scope.

List the actual tasks

• Patch repairs after maintenance work.
• Preparing and skimming suitable walls.
• Boarding or making good damaged linings.
• Exterior rendering with a particular material.
• Recognising work that needs escalation to an experienced specialist.

Separate what happens frequently from unusual or specialist work. Identify which staff are beginners and which already use plastering tools. Avoid putting very different training needs into one brief merely because the people work for the same organisation.

Send a useful enquiry

1. Explain the role and number of people.
2. List the tasks you want them to practise.
3. Describe their current experience.
4. Give suitable dates and any accessibility or support requirements.
5. Explain how they will use the skills and who will supervise afterwards.

Agree what success looks like

Possible outcomes include following a preparation sequence, mixing consistently, recognising unsuitable backgrounds or carrying out a defined practice repair. Set outcomes that can be observed. A short practical course is not a blanket sign-off to undertake every plastering task independently.

Plan the return to work

Give staff a suitable opportunity to practise, access to the correct equipment and a named person for technical questions. Review examples of their work and record which tasks still need support. Use their feedback to decide whether more practice or a different course is needed.
