Cork Spray and Cork Plaster: What to Check Before Specifying

Cork-based finishes are a product family, not one universal solution. TIWI CorkSpray currently describes both spray-cork coatings and AeroCork insulating plaster. Ask which exact product is proposed, its intended purpose and its written specification.

Start with the supplier’s current product information. A spray coating and a thicker insulating plaster should not be compared as though the applied thickness and thermal performance were identical.

Ask for evidence that matches your project

• Product name, composition and intended indoor or outdoor use.
• Applied thickness, coverage and substrate preparation.
• Declared thermal performance at the thickness being proposed.
• Relevant fire classification and full-system suitability.
• Vapour and water-management information for the wall build-up.
• Compatible repairs, primers and decorative finishes.
• Installer requirements, maintenance and any warranty conditions.

Investigate damp before choosing a coating

Find the cause of a cold or damp surface before treating a finish as the solution. Leaks, rain penetration and condensation need different responses. Ask how the proposed work addresses the diagnosis and how its performance will be checked afterwards.

Do not assume a coating guarantees the elimination of mould or damp, produces a particular energy saving, or is carbon negative without evidence covering that claim. For a traditional building, obtain advice about the complete moisture behaviour and the effect on existing fabric.

Get a useful sample

A sample should demonstrate the proposed preparation, full thickness and finished texture. Ask how edges, sockets, reveals and junctions will look. Keep a written record of the agreed finish before a whole room or elevation is started.
