Learn to skim in a practical weekend

Spend two days getting hands-on with two-coat skimming on real walls and plasterboard. This course is suitable for complete beginners and DIY learners; no previous experience is needed.

Saturday and Sunday · 9:00am–3:00pm · Maximum 4 learners · £329 for 2026 dates

What you’ll do during the weekend

You’ll start with the tools, materials and surface preparation, then spend the rest of the weekend applying plaster, working through the two-coat process and improving your finish. The pace can be adapted to the group.

  • Prepare and mix: get the background ready and mix plaster to a workable consistency.
  • Get comfortable with the tools: learn to load and control a hawk and trowel while applying plaster to a training surface.
  • Skim in two coats: practise coverage, timing between coats and working across walls and plasterboard.
  • Finish and correct: flatten, trowel and polish the surface, with help spotting and correcting common beginner mistakes.
  • Have another go: use repeated hands-on practice and feedback to make the process feel more familiar.

Small-group training

You’ll work in a training bay with demonstrations and guidance as you practise. With no more than four learners, there is time to ask questions and get individual feedback. This is an introduction to the skill; you’ll need further practice to build speed and consistency.

What’s included

Tools and materials are provided. Wear old clothes and work boots; it’s a practical, messy course.
