Which Plastering Course Should I Choose?

The right plastering course depends on what you want to achieve, how much practical experience you already have and how much time you can spend on the tools. This guide gives you a straight answer.
Start with your goal
Before comparing course lengths, decide what success looks like for you. A homeowner who wants to repair and skim a room has a different goal from someone testing whether plastering could become a trade. More days do not automatically make someone a professional plasterer. They provide more guided practice, repetition and time to correct mistakes.
Choose the 2-day hands-on skimming course if…
- You are a complete beginner who wants to try plastering properly.
- You want to understand preparation, mixing, applying and flattening finishing plaster.
- You are a DIY learner planning small repairs or renovation work.
- You already work in construction and want to add basic skimming experience.
The weekday and weekend versions are the same practical skimming course. The main difference is the schedule. Both are delivered in the working bays, with a maximum of four learners.

Choose the 5-day hands-on course if…
- You want more time to repeat the complete process.
- You want practical experience with plasterboarding as well as skimming.
- You learn best through correction, repetition and working on several surfaces.
- You want a stronger foundation before practising independently.
Five days gives you more time to improve control, timing and consistency. It is still an introduction to practical plastering rather than a promise that you will leave as a fully experienced tradesperson.

Choose the 10-day course if…
- You want the greatest amount of supervised practical time.
- You want a wider programme covering boarding, skimming and associated preparation.
- You are seriously exploring plastering as a trade or want to build confidence before further experience.
- You understand that becoming competent takes continued practice after the course.
The biggest advantage of ten days is repetition. Plastering is a physical skill: watching a demonstration helps, but improvement comes from mixing, applying, flattening and correcting your own work repeatedly.

What if you mainly want to learn rendering?
Choose a dedicated rendering course. Interior skimming and exterior rendering use different materials, backgrounds and finishing techniques. Our rendering options cover practical preparation and application rather than trying to squeeze exterior work into a short skimming course.

Liverpool School of Plastering provides practical training. These courses are not an NVQ and should not be presented as a guaranteed route to becoming qualified. Learners who need an NVQ for site work should check the separate assessment route and experience requirements before booking.
